This film entitled “The scream of the fox in the cold night” portrays a community in the Portuguese hinterland, in the Transmontano North-East, which preserves one of the most secular traditions of our country, the Varge boys’ party.

The soundtrack was created and produced by Joe Schievano

In a village in the interior of Portugal, in the north-east of Trás-os-Montes, a group of boys conquers time and distance, cyclically bringing the magical moment of the winter party to their village. A celebration with ancestral roots, well before Christianity and which still prevails and lives in the soul of its people. As in most villages in the interior of the country, immigration is a definite and persistent shadow, and the search for a better life offers us mixed and contradictory emotions, but the strength of friendship and the feeling of community is more strong for everyone. come home every year to harvest and bring the village to life.

This documentary is the first of three that will be made on the theme of winter festivities and the Trás-os-Montes area in Portugal.

The film is directed by Ri Pedro Lamy for the Portuguese production company Ethno.

The film has already been selected at the anthropology film festival in Estonia and soon also in Cyprus
