Sonic Clips #01
A series of clips made by Joe Schievano to talk about music and sound for images.
Music intensity
the volume of the music in the images is crucial for contextualizing the scene. In this clip we start with the pure and intense sound of the roar of the water slowly lowering in volume, while at the same time raising that of the music.
By immersing ourselves in the scene (best with headphones or earbuds) we will observe the experience of the transition from an “external” perception of objective reality, to a gradually more introspective and emotional one. A kind of emotional crossfade.
After the crossfade
The scene is now presented with ambient noise silenced, but with music brought to the foreground. This new sound situation gives space for our thoughts, symbols, and interpretations, that is, it takes us inside ourselves, to an introspective process. This is a mode widely used in cinama, both fiction and documentary, and has several purposes, including for example wanting to bring out something unspoken, or to distance oneself from the scene in order to contextualize it in something more universal, or to create a definite separation with the scene that will follow.
